The breeds on this list will still need moderate exercise, such as yard time or a daily walk. But on the whole, they’d much rather hang out at home than go for a run.

Basset Hound

Is it any wonder that Basset Hounds are more sedate? Between their giant eyes and even larger ears, it’s not surprising that they prefer their beds to the backyard. Even so, they’ll still need at least an hour or two of solid exercise to prevent obesity and keep them engaged.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel vacillates between regally relaxing and demanding playtime. Thankfully, they’re easily satisfied with a serious game of frisbee or long walk, after which they’re happy to hop on the couch and snuggle.

Of note is their prey drive, which can lead them to sprint after squirrels, rabbits, and other small animals. Because of this, make sure to keep them leashed while on walks.

French Bulldog

The French Bulldog has a face that absolutely anyone can love— and their personality is just as charming! This dog doesn’t bark a lot, isn’t prone to shedding, and adores hanging out at home. 

Keep in mind, they’re predisposed to both breathing issues and obesity. So while they need regular exercise, make sure they don’t overextend themselves.

English Bulldog

Greyhound

To an onlooker, the Greyhound may appear to be one of the most high-energy dogs. But people familiar with this breed affectionally refer to them as a ’40 mph couch potato.’ Greyhounds are certainly able to sprint fast, but only for short periods of time.

Off the racetrack and in your home, Greyhounds would much prefer to curl up with you and snuggle. 

Bernese Mountain Dog

As a breed with ties going all the way back to the Chinese Han Dynasty, the Chow Chow is born ready to reign dominion over every pillow and blanket in your home. Their distinctive face and trademark purple and black tongues are second only to their penchant for impromptu naps.

Though Chow Chows are very protective and can be suspicious of strangers, early and regular socialization will help curb these tendencies. 

Saint Bernard

The Saint Bernard’s reputation as family friendly and the archetypal “nanny dog” is well earned. These gentle giants are equally happy playing fetch outside and snoozing at your feet indoors. If you have kids and are willing to suffer through some well-meaning slobber, then this is the best candidate.  

Great Dane

For those who love to play hard and nap hard, the Great Dane is a great choice. While this breed does need to regularly stretch its legs and requires a decent amount of activity, they’re equally serious about getting their beauty sleep.

However, they are prone to hip dysplasia. Between that and their general size, they’ll need plenty of beds and other soft surfaces to lay on.
